In 2022, under the influence of multiple factors such as the epidemic and the economic situation, the coatings industry maintained steady growth. According to statistics, the output of coatings in China reached 38 million tons in 2021, green, low-carbon and high-quality development have become the main theme of the development of China’s coatings industry, realizing the transformation from extensive growth to quality and efficiency growth. The status of China’s coatings industry in the global coatings industry is becoming more and more important, and the pace of progress from a big country of coatings to a strong country of coatings is more determined. In terms of green product certification, green factory evaluation, solid waste assessment, high-quality talent training, industry-university-research cooperation innovation platform construction, and international influence enhancement, the industry continues to promote high-quality development and continues to serve as an important engine for the global development of coatings!
*II. The industry continues to fight against the epidemic and focuses on self-help production*
In 2022, major companies in the industry continued to implement anti-epidemic models. Companies such as North Xinjiang Building Materials, Huayi Petrochemical, Simcote, Fostex, Haihua Academy, Jiaboli, Xinhe, Zhejiang Bridge, Northwest Yongxin, Tianjin Beacon Tower, Bard Fort, Benteng Coatings, Jiangxi Guangyuan, Jinlitai, Jiangsu Yida, Yi Pin Pigments, Yuxing Machinery and Trade, Huayuan Pigments, Zhujiang Coatings, Jinyu Coatings, Qiangli New Materials, Ruilai Technology, Yantai Titanium, Mandeli, Jitai, Qisansi, Zaodun, Xuanwei, Libang, Axalta, PPG, Dow, Hengshui Paint, Langsheng, Hempel, AkzoNobel, etc. arranged personnel to carry out self-rescue and assistance models for enterprises and society, donated money and goods, and made efforts to actively fulfill social responsibilities and demonstrate the responsibility and responsibility of coatings enterprises.
Industry associations and chambers of commerce represented by the China National Coatings Industry Association have also carried out anti-epidemic assistance work. *III. Further improvement of policies and regulations*
In recent years, the key focuses of the coatings industry include VOCs control, lead-free coatings, microplastics, risk assessment of titanium dioxide and research and control of biocides, as well as related policies and regulations. Recently, chemical management, risk assessment and classification, PFAS control and exempt solvents have been added.
On November 23, 2022, the Court of Justice of the European Union annulled the EU’s classification of titanium dioxide in powder form as a carcinogenic substance by inhalation. The court found that the European Commission made obvious errors in assessing the reliability and acceptability of the studies on which the classification was based, and wrongly applied the EU classification criteria to substances that do not have intrinsic carcinogenic properties.
IV. Actively build a green coatings system for the coatings industry, and many companies have passed green product and green factory certification*
Since 2016, under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the China Coatings Industry Association has actively carried out the construction of a green manufacturing system in the coatings and pigments industry. Through standard guidance and certification pilots, a green manufacturing system including green parks, green factories, green products and green supply chains has been established. By the end of 2022, there are 2 green factory evaluation standards for coatings and titanium dioxide, as well as 7 green design product evaluation standards for water-based architectural coatings, etc. included in the green standards list by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
On June 6, six ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the first batch of 2022 green building materials to the countryside product list and enterprise list, and launched the “2022 Green Building Materials to the Countryside Public Information Release Platform”. They encourage qualified areas to provide appropriate subsidies or loan discounts for green building materials consumption. Play the advantages of e-commerce platforms to guide and stimulate consumption. In the “List of Certified Green Building Material Products and Enterprises (First Batch in 2022)”, 82 coatings and related companies including Sangeshu, North Xinjiang Building Materials, Jiaboli, Fostex, Zhejiang Bridge, Junzi Blue, and coatings products are selected.
The China National Coatings Industry Association has also actively promoted the certification of green products and green factories in the coatings industry. At present, many companies have passed the China Green Product Certification and Low VOC Coatings Product Evaluation.
*V. Release warnings, price indices and analyze industry trends*
In early March 2022, according to the latest survey, due to the rapid rise in upstream raw material prices, most companies in China’s coatings industry have suffered losses. After careful study, the China National Coatings Industry Association issued the first profit warning for China’s coatings industry in 2022, urging companies in the industry to closely monitor profitability and operating conditions, and adjust their business strategies in a timely manner according to changes in the upstream raw material market.
At the suggestion of the Raw Materials Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the China National Coatings Industry Association released the China Coatings Industry Price Index for the first time at the 2022 China Coatings Industry Information Annual Conference from August 24 to 26. So far, the coatings industry has a barometer that reflects the economic operation at any time. The establishment of the China Coatings Industry Price Index marks the establishment of a quantitative system for evaluating the health of the coatings industry chain. It will also help establish a market communication mechanism between companies, industry associations and government management departments. The China Coatings Industry Price Index consists of two parts: the upstream raw material procurement index and the downstream finished product price index. According to the monitoring, the growth rates of the two indices tend to be consistent. They have successfully provided accurate data support for all participating units. The next step will be to develop sub-indices, expand new companies participating in the index, and provide more services to companies included in the index to further improve the accuracy of the index and better reflect the price trend of coatings and raw materials. Guide the healthy development of the industry.
*VI. The work of China National Coatings Industry Association and key enterprises is recognized by UNEP*
With the strong support of the China National Coatings Industry Association and various pilot companies, after more than two years of effort, the Technical Guidelines for Lead-containing Coatings Reformulation (Chinese version), one of the achievements of the lead-containing coatings technology pilot project undertaken by the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences (National Cleaner Production Center), was officially released on the UNEP official website. Two pigment suppliers in China [Yingze New Materials (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Shuangye Chemical Pigments Co., Ltd.] and five coatings production pilot companies (Fish Child New Materials Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Tian’nv Group Paint Co., Ltd., Hunan Xiangjiang Coatings Group Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Lanling High Polymer Materials Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Changjiang Coatings Co., Ltd.) received official thanks in the UNEP publication, and the products of two companies were included in the cases. In addition, UNEP also interviewed Tian’nv Company and published a news report on its official website. All parties involved in the project were highly recognized by UNEP.
